Oskar Schuster aspired to create something that would sound like a combination of old horror movie soundtracks and music from old computer games (from the 8 and 16-bit era). Danny Elfman’s scores for some of Tim Burton’s movies were among his inspirations as well.
To achieve this sound, Oskar layered sampled and synthetic instruments with his recordings of real Celesta and Dulcitone, two rare instruments with an eerie sound. Both are played like a piano, but when the keys are struck, the hammers hit metal plates instead of strings, producing a bell-like sound more similar to a glockenspiel or vibraphone.
