The protagonist, Sergei, is a Soviet student who has just enrolled in the rocket and space engineering faculty of the country's main university. Sergei's parents went missing during an accident on the space station Zarya; he was just a child then, and any details of what happened remained a government secret.

Sergei has long since given up hope of finding out the truth, but on one of the first days of classes, when the head of the freshman was busy with much more mundane concerns, he learns that a large part of the development of the station was carried out on the grounds of the university. Now, he is determined to continue the investigation and get to the truth, not knowing whether it is out of pure curiosity, a sense of justice, longing for his relatives or some other emotions.
