Following the death of his best friend during a generationally destructive hurricane that completely decimated his small town, Jin Kinoshita spent the next eight years of his life decomposing in the southern heat. Each day, slaving for minimum wage at a rundown fast food restaurant to barely be able to pay rent.

His dream of becoming a professional artist alongside his friend Leo Ainzberg was the only thing keeping him going. Without his friend to encourage him, Jin allowed all of his talent to slip away from him like sand in an open palm. Burdened with the pain of watching his friend slowly die of cancer, while simultaneously failing to capture anything he ever sought for, Jin repeated his cycle of suicide attempts and desperate self harm rituals in order to rid himself of the crushing weight of those failures.

This year looked like it was gearing up for the worst weather seen since the night his friend died. The rain brings back a flash of memories, good and bad, back into the forefront of Jin's mind. During a strong downpour, Jin accidentally reunited with his dead friend's sister Momo, who has since become a successful artist in her own right. Jin, with encouragement from the past he had tried to forget, builds his resolve to take a chance on his dream once more.

With the help of his downstairs neighbor Connie and all of the new people he found himself suddenly surrounded by, Jin starts the process to pick the pieces of his life back up. Spurred on by friends, both old and new, they all tread the waist deep water together through their journey to recovery.
