The story begins with the monotonous life of Haruo, a young man whose job is to control the birth rate on his assigned spaceship. Having just turned 24, Haruo's adventure begins with his newfound obligation to father a child. As a spaceship citizen, he is required by law to soon raise a child, lest the birth ratio shift away from normal levels. Given six months, after which he will be forcibly assigned a mate, Haruo's friend Meiko invites him on a trip around the city, with the goal of finding a suitable mate. Amidst his search, however, Haruo receives a call from his boss, informing him that he will be moving to another city as he takes on a different role. Now, with his recent promotion to a huge, foreign city, Haruo's search resumes. But as Haruo faces the reality of leaving behind his partner, and witnesses first-hand the abuse suffered by the near-human Fireflies, his search proves to be the least of his worries.
